Understand The Factors Of Your Accident
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released the results of the Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS). With the goal of better understanding the causes of large truck crashes, the commission studied 963 crashes causing injury or death. These accidents involved 1,123 large trucks and 959 motor vehicles.
Based on this study, 10 factors emerged as causing the most accidents:
Drug use came out as the leading cause of accidents due to the delayed reaction time of drivers.
Speeding truck drivers were involved in 23 percent of the accidents.
Truckers were often driving on unfamiliar roads.
Over-the-counter medications were a factor in 18 percent of the accidents studied.
Drivers often failed to appropriately check blind spots.
Driver fatigue was reported as the cause of 13 percent of the accidents.
Truck operators commonly failed to signal or adhere to other basic rules of the road.
Operators were often engaged in distracted driving behaviors, such as texting or talking on the phone.
Drivers often underestimated the amount of room they need to maneuver roads and turn.
Aggressive or reckless driving was a factor in 7 percent of crashes.
Clearly, general negligence is the leading cause of truck-related crashes.
If your accident, like so many others, was caused by the reckless actions of another, you may be eligible for compensation. If successful, your lawsuit could bring in enough compensation to cover all of your current and future accident-related expenses.
